Subaru Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain 2003-2005 Model Year Subaru Vehicles in Areas of High Absolute Humidity

October 24, 2014

HONOLULU (October 24, 2014) – SubaruHawaii.com – Subaru of America has announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on certain 2003-2005 Model Year vehicles. This Safety Recall applies to owners of vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in areas of High Absolute Humidity including Hawaii.

Affected vehicles include:

  • 2003 – 2005 Baja, Legacy and Outback
  • 2004 – 2005 Impreza (including WRX and STI)

A total of 688 vehicles are affected here in Hawaii.

The subject vehicles are equipped with front passenger air bag assemblies. When located in areas with consistently high absolute humidity, the front passenger air bag inflator could be susceptible to rupture and the front passenger air bag could deploy abnormally in a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the occupant. The cause of the potential ruptured inflators and influence of high absolute humidity are under investigation.

Subaru Hawaii strongly recommends that owners of affected vehicles have the Safety Recall remedy performed immediately. Subaru Hawaii customers should contact any authorized Subaru Hawaii dealer to schedule an appointment. Subaru Hawaii dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator module at no charge to the vehicle owner. In the interim, do not allow vehicle occupants to sit in the front passenger seat.

This Safety Recall only applies to the front passenger air bag inflator module. Other air bags in the vehicles are not affected by this condition.

Letters were sent in late September to owners of affected vehicles informing them about the recall and what steps they should take. If you did not receive a letter and you are the owner of one of the affected vehicles, please contact your local Subaru Hawaii dealer to make an appointment to have your car checked. In the interim, do not allow vehicle occupants to sit in the front passenger seat.

Subaru Hawaii customers can call their Subaru Hawaii dealer or Subaru Hawaii’s Customer Care department at 808-839-2273 (CARE) with questions.  Customers on the neighbor islands can call 1-888-272-5515 (toll-free).
